I smiled when I saw this headline at Yahoo news:
Texas voters approve gay marriage ban
followed by:
San Francisco Voters Approve Handgun Ban
It almost like both places voted against the lifestyle of the other.

Having lived in both places, I'm pretty sure that if San Francisco could vote to wipe Texas off the map they would.
However, although there are some really odd people in Texas, they do like to visit California. Can't see them wanting to waste a tourist destination.
Also, from after-action studies of the gay marriage vote in Oklahoma (and I'll assume it runs along the same lines in TX) it appears that there seems to be a big issue with wording. "Gay Marriage" would have gotten a huge degree more support with a mere semantical change... "Civil Unions" as opposed to "Marriage."
Of course, the semantic change wouldn't have made everyone okay with it- just a larger percentage.
