Just like Sarah sometimes worries that her blog is becoming the knitting blog, I fear mine has become the puppy blog. We took Susie out on the lake this weekend, and she really enjoys it. We have been taking her since she was just over 3 months, so she is an old pro at this by now. She leaps from the boat onto the dock. And she is starting to get more secure in the water. We will be investing in a dog float vest now that she is approaching full size.

Oliver Stone does George W Bush.

This was the first I had heard about Oliver Stone's biopic W, which will chonincal the life and presidency of Dubbya.

I just don't get it. According to Just Jared (don't you love who my sources are: salicious gossip sites...*sigh*):
Bush is reportedly portrayed in the film as a foul-mouthed, reformed drunk obsessed with baseball, Saddam Hussein and the conflicted relationship with his dad.

Why would Stone waste his time and (other people's) money producing a film like that? I don't see how this is going to be a big money maker or even an influential movie. Yes, there are loads of people who loathe Bush...but are they going to pay $10+ to watch a movie about someone they "put up with" for the last 8 years? Why? Also, unlike say Fahrenheit 911, this movie isn't going to really have any possible effect on the upcoming elections. Also, it's not like people are obsessed with Bush. They have other things on their minds right now: two possible Democratic nominees for President. They are working towards a brighter future, in their opinion. Why would they want to revisit something that is so recent in their memories? It would be such a waste of time. Preaching to the converted.

And the people who like Bush...well, they certainly won't be paying $10 to go see him trashed.

I just don't get how someone who is filled with such hate for a living person, could possibly produce a good film about them.

However, as a total compliment for Condi Rice: they cast hawtie ex-Bond girl Thandie Newton to play the National Security Advisor.

Blogging as Journalism...how far we have come

I was watching an episode of Law and Order last night, it was from the Benjamin Bratt/Jerry Orbach era...i.e. back in the day, it was when Bratt had just started on the show, so in 1995.

Anyhoo...one of the witnesses to the murder they were investigating posted pieces on an electronic bulletin board. The witness was reluctant to testify so he claimed protection under the press shield law, saying he was a journalist and shouldn't have to reveal his sources (he claimed to have not seen the crime in person, but talked to people immediately after it happened).

The defense brought in a professor of journalism to ask if he considered the BBer a journalist. And he agreed he was. The prosecution was incredulous about this, and tried to argue that the BBer definitely wasn't a journalist.

And it just struck me, fast forward 13 years things are a lot different. Jury members wouldn't look so confused about this whole new "internet" medium, and bloggers could and can probably decently stand behind the press shield law.
